Floating Head Heat Exchangers

Floating head heat exchangers are a type of shell and tube heat exchanger designed to facilitate thermal expansion and contraction, as well as ease of maintenance.

Floating head heat exchangers are used in various industries and applications where thermal expansion and contraction need to be accommodated, or where ease of maintenance is important. Common applications include petrochemical processing, chemical manufacturing, oil refining, power generation, and HVAC systems.

Like conventional shell and tube heat exchangers, floating head heat exchangers consist of a shell (outer vessel) and a bundle of tubes within the shell. However, in a floating head design, one end of the tube bundle is attached to a floating tube sheet, while the other end is fixed to a stationary tube sheet. This allows the tube bundle to move freely within the shell.

The floating tube sheet is typically sealed with a floating head cover, which allows the tube bundle to move axially within the shell in response to thermal expansion and contraction. This floating head design accommodates changes in tube length due to temperature variations, preventing stress on the tubes and tube sheets.

Floating head heat exchangers are constructed with materials suitable for the operating conditions and fluid properties involved in the heat transfer process. The shell, tube bundle, and tube sheets are commonly made of metal alloys such as stainless steel, carbon steel, or titanium, depending on factors such as temperature, pressure, and corrosion resistance requirements.
