An air-cooled heat exchanger (ACHE), also known as an air cooler, is a type of heat exchanger used to cool fluids by transferring heat to the surrounding air.
Air-cooled heat exchangers typically consist of a series of finned tubes through which a hot fluid flows. The tubes are arranged in rows and connected to headers at each end. The fluid exchanges heat with the surrounding air as it flows through the tubes, and the heat is dissipated into the atmosphere.
The airflow in air-cooled heat exchangers can be either forced draft or induced draft. In forced draft systems, fans are used to blow air across the tube bundles, while in induced draft systems, fans are used to draw air through the tube bundles.
Both configurations are designed to maximize heat transfer efficiency by optimizing airflow over the tube surfaces.

Fins are attached to the outer surface of the tubes to increase the surface area available for heat transfer and improve heat dissipation into the air. The fins create turbulence in the airflow, enhancing heat transfer rates and improving overall efficiency.
Air-cooled heat exchangers are commonly used in various industries for cooling applications where water is not readily available or where water-based cooling systems are not feasible. They are widely employed in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, natural gas processing facilities, power plants, HVAC systems, and other industrial processes.
